Immigration History from Chile to Victoria

In 1837 two Chileans arrived in Sydney, the first on record in Australia. They were no ordinary people, one being former president General Ramon Freire, exiled from Chile after attempting to re-take power in a coup. He did not settle in Australia, however, but eventually returned to his homeland.

Few Chileans followed in the footsteps of their exiled President until the gold rushes of the 1850s which saw many more arrive in Victoria - some to escape racial persecution on the goldfields of California. The Chileans certainly made an impact, as goldminers throughout the state benefited from the technology of the “Chilean mill”, which crushed ore using large stone wheels that revolved around a circular axis. Ironically, this technology was probably imported to Australia by Americans and Europeans.

The number of Victorians born in Chile remained low for the rest of the nineteenth century, and by 1901 only 22 Chileans called Victoria home.

It was not until the economic and political upheavals of the late 1960s and early 1970s that Chileans began to arrive in larger numbers. These upheavals culminated in the 1973 military coup by General Pinochet, followed by a period of persecution and violence towards opponents of the new regime. The Whitlam government responded by allowing larger numbers of Chileans to migrate to Australia and provided assistance to Chilean immigrants.

Today, it is for economic rather than political reasons that Chileans are seeking new lives in Victoria. They are the largest group from Latin America in the state, with over 7,420 Chileans recorded in the 2016 census.

The Chilean community of Victoria has formed a number of groups, some concerned with their place of origin, such as those focused on human rights issues in Chile; others taking an active interest in politics in their adopted Australian state. Passionate involvement with social, sporting and political activities ensures the vibrant Chilean culture lives on in Victoria.

En 1.837, dos chilenos llegaron a Sydney, este es el primer registro que se tiene en Australia. Ellos no eran personas del común; uno de ellos era el ex-presidente, general Ramón Freire, exilado de Chile luego de un intento de golpe de estado para recuperar el poder. De todas maneras, Freire no se radicó en Australia y regresó a su país natal.

Pocos chilenos siguieron el ejemplo del exilado presidente, hasta la época de la fiebre del oro en la década de 1.850, en que muchos llegaron a Victoria; algunos escapando de los campos auríferos de California. Los chilenos crearon un gran impacto como mineros a través del estado, que se benefició con la técnica del “molino chileno”, que trituraba mineral usando grandes ruedas de piedra, que giraban alrededor de un eje circular. Irónicamente, esta tecnología tal vez fue importada a Australia por europeos y americanos.

El numero de victorianos nacidos en Chile, se mantuvo a un bajo nivel por el resto del siglo XIX y para el año 1.901, solo 22 chilenos designaban a Victoria como su hogar.

No fue sino hasta el final de 1.960 y principios de 1.970, cuando ocurrieron cambios económicos y políticos radicales, en que los chilenos llegaron en un gran numero. Estos cambios radicales culminaron con el golpe militar del General Pinochet en 1.973, seguidos por un periodo de persecución y violencia contra los oponentes del nuevo régimen. El gobierno de Whitlam respondió permitiendo que un gran número de chilenos inmigraran a Australia, contribuyendo además con asistencia a estos mismos.

En estos días, las razones por las cuales los chilenos desean vivir en Victoria, son más económicas que políticas. Ellos son el grupo más grande de latinoamericanos en este estado, 7097 personas según el censo del año 2011.

La comunidad chilena de Victoria ha formado diferentes grupos, algunos preocupados con su lugar de origen, los que enfocan sus esfuerzos a velar por los derechos humanos en Chile y otros han tomado un gran interés en la política de Victoria, su patria adoptiva.

La pasión por las actividades políticas, sociales y deportivas, aseguran que la vibrante cultura chilena se viva en Victoria.
